YG edges The Game in star-studded Verzuz celebration of Compton!
The West Coast was in the spotlight on Wednesday night as YG and The Game went head-to-head in one of the most anticipated Verzuz battles to date. The event celebrated two of Compton’s biggest names, with both artists revisiting the records that helped define their careers while paying tribute to the city’s lasting impact on hip-hop.
Across 22 rounds, the pair traded classics from their extensive catalogues, creating a night filled with nostalgia, energy and hometown pride. Although both rappers delivered memorable performances, the fan vote ultimately favoured YG, who was credited with winning 17 rounds compared to The Game’s five.
The atmosphere felt more like a celebration than a competition, with several familiar faces from the Los Angeles music scene joining the festivities throughout the evening. Artists including Kalan.FrFr, RJ and Chef Boy all made appearances, adding to the sense of community surrounding the event.
The Game leaned on the records that established him as one of the West Coast’s most influential artists. Tracks including 'Westside Story', 'Dreams, How We Do', 'Hate It Or Love It', 'Put You On The Game' and 'My Life' reminded viewers of the impact he has had over the past two decades. As the night progressed, however, many fans noticed he appeared to become increasingly intoxicated while drinking Don Julio Reposado on stage, with some suggesting it affected the momentum of his performance.
YG wasted little time making his intentions clear, opening with 'BPT' before launching into a string of fan favourites including 'Bicken Back Being Bool', 'Fuck It Up', 'Twist My Fingaz', 'Toot It And Boot It', 'Who Do You Love?' and 'FDT'. His set maintained its intensity throughout the battle, with standout moments arriving during performances of 'You Broke' featuring Nipsey Hussle, 'Left, Right', 'Bompton', 'Big Bank', 'I’m A Real 1' and 'Gang Bizness'.
The event became so lively that organisers were forced to clear the stage on multiple occasions as more supporters continued joining the artists on stage.
Despite YG dominating the overall score, The Game still claimed several memorable victories. 'Westside Story' narrowly earned the nod over 'My N****', while 'Dreams' edged past 'Gang Bang'. One of the closest moments of the evening arrived during Round 20, where 'Hate It Or Love It' and YG’s 'Still Brazy' finished level after fans split their votes evenly.
Although the final result suggested a comfortable victory for YG, the battle served as a reminder of the influence both artists have had on West Coast rap. From early 2000s classics to modern-day anthems, the Verzuz showcased the evolution of Compton’s sound while celebrating two artists whose music continues to shape the culture.
