inQUIZitive: Shae OT

Emerging onto the scene we have an exciting new talent who goes by the name of Shae OT. The 22 year old from London has been hard at work polishing his production skills, and having made a name for himself by posting music tributes to computer game soundtracks online, he is now ready to take his artistry to the next level.

It's been an impressive breakthrough year for the multi-faceted creative with his track being used to launch this years 'Paris Fashion Week', and now he is back with his official debut single. The initial feature on Fashion Week was in-fact an early instrumental version of the new track which has now been perfected and laced with some infectious raps from popular UK rapper BackRoad Gee.

Shae OT certainly isn't an artist that you should be sleeping on, and just to help you get to know him a little bit better we caught up with him for the latest edition of inQUIZitive.

Shae OT

In 5 words, describe the city that raised you - and tell us your most distinctive memory growing up there?

London in 5 words: Chaotic, fast-paced, bipolar weather. My most distinctive memory growing up in London is probably Notting Hill Carnival. Growing up every year I would always go and enjoy the different cultures, music and food. Going carnival is always a good experience to see historically how much music and culture has had an impact and shaped the music we listen to today.

You get home and your family are playing music…what 3 tracks can we expect to hear?

It could be any genre that I come home to so it's a hard one!! If I could name 3 songs from House music it would be: Black Coffee feat. Bucie - Turn Me On,

Ricky L feat Mick - Born Again (Baelaric Soul Radio Edit)

Sunday Showers - Kentphonik

You have 2 studio sessions to create the dream collaboration - who are you calling?

The dream collab that I would have for the 2 studio sessions would be Metro Boomin & Kaytranada. Both have shaped their sounds into who they are today and have become influential artists in their own respective right. I think us 3 together could definitely fuse together a mixture of Hip-Hop, Drill and House all into a genre of its own for sure, or we choose one of those 3 genres and add our touches to that genre to make it sound unique.

You’re only allowed 3 clothing brands/designers in your wardrobe. What are you wearing?

The three clothing brands/designers I would have in my wardrobe would be Converse, Underarmour and Nike.

Your diet is limited to two meals. You can pick one that you have to cook, and can pick one to be cooked for you. What are you going for?

Rasta Pasta for myself to cook, and a roast dinner to be cooked for me

You can erase one film or tv series from your memory, and can watch it again for the first time. What are you picking?

Alice in Borderland

How did it feel when you found out your track was going to be used for the launch of Paris Fashion Week?

I was absolutely shocked and amazed that such a big platform would want to use my music. It was a surreal feeling for sure!

What lessons have your parents taught you as fellow musicians and creatives?

They've both taught me a lot of things as they both are musicians and creatives themselves. My Mum bought me my first computer where I made beats on Logic, and from there I've never looked back on using that software. She also has helped me to DJ and understand the basics of how to mix songs properly, as she has a wide knowledge of music from being a DJ herself. My Dad also helped me produce on Logic and bought me my second computer, and on top of that helped me guide through the music business with legal contracts and agreements. For me, my Mum and Dad have played a massive role in my artistic journey as musicians and creatives.

At what age did you realise you wanted to pursue a career in music?

I probably would say around 15-16, when I first started making beats. Before that I DJ'd a little bit, but that was for fun. When I realised I could make music on computers, I instantly fell in love with doing it. Then I realised that I could then go on to college and study it even further and connect with like-minded peers, and of course make a career out of it.

Where did the inspiration come from to create beats from gaming & anime soundtracks?

The inspiration to sample video games came from me originally playing video games in the pandemic. I was going through old games on the PS4 and decided to complete Watch Dogs which I eventually did. I set myself a challenge to sample the menu theme from it into a drill beat. I then put that out on TikTok and Instagram, in which it got a slight buzz. From there I took requests from many people to sample tracks, in which the anime soundtrack recommendations started coming through. From there on I've sampled tons of soundtracks in which I now have built up an audience of anime and video game lovers.

What can we expect to see from Shae OT in the next 12 months?

More video game/anime remixes, more genres of music being made, more collaborations with artists and also an exploration down the DJ/streaming route for sure.
