REVIEW: The Lovebirds (2020)
With the cinematic release of Michael Showalter's romantic comedy curtailed by COVID-19, it was forced to find a new home. Step forward Netflix, who are seemingly incapable of saying no to anything with the words 'romantic' and 'comedy' in its synopsis. There's not much to distinguish this from the plethora of similar fare that can be found on the world's most popular streaming platform, but it does have two extremely talented leads in Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae.
Their chemistry makes this a hell of a lot more interesting than it otherwise would have been, doing nothing to dispel the notion that they are two of the best comics around right now. But it's probably not enough to render The Lovebirds as anything other than a fleetingly entertaining, yet ultimately forgettable, slice of leave-your-brain-at-the-door comedy.
