NEW ALBUM: Childish Gambino - 3.15.20
Following film and television success with projects like “Atlanta”, “Solo: A Star Wars” and voicing Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King” (2019), the multi-talented Donald Glover provided us with possibly the final instalment of his music persona - Childish Gambino. “3.15.20”, his fourth studio album under this alias, dropped following the web page “http://donaldgloverpresents.com” being posted on March 15, with the new music being played on there. The music was then taken down and later replaced with a countdown scheduled to finish on March 22, 2020, which is when the album would eventually become available to all direct streaming platforms. T
he album follows nearly four years after his well-received previous project “Awaken, My Love” was released, where Gambino stepped into his own lane musically. The Atlanta artist used a mix of R&B, soul, funk and electronic sounds to create a unique sounding collection of records, which included the stand-out single - “Redbone”. In May 2018, Gambino released his political trap record “This is America” which won Record of the Year at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Gambino followed this by releasing the two-track “Summer Pack” which included the record “Feels Like Summer”. This record appears on the album under its new title “42.26”, with all but two records being named under their time stamps.
The twelve track LP includes appearances from pop superstar Ariana Grande and an impressive verse from Zone 6 rapper 21 Savage, both being unlisted features. The unique sound from “Awaken, My Love” carries over into the “03.15.20”, sounding even more polished. The alternative beats accompanied by his charisma, incredible range and vocal capabilities all bind together for quality listening. Gambino’s surprise release just might be his musical masterpiece.
