The Top 5 Best & Worst Films Of 2019

After an action packed year which saw the release of so many films, both good and bad, CGlifestyle writer, Ben Rasmin, has decided to narrow it down, and pick out his top 5 best, and worst films of 2019...

1. The Irishman

More a musing on life than criminality, Martin Scorsese's The Irishman is one of the most beautifully expressive films in his long list of classics.

2. When They See Us

Enraging and politically poignant, Ava DuVernay's vivid retelling of the infamous Central Park Five case might just be the best thing Netflix have put their name to.

3. The Virtues

Shane Meadows' return to the small screen proved to be a typically meditative piece which quietly escalates into a gut-wrenching symphony of self destruction.

4. Joker

Rather than asking you to sympathise with its antagonist, Todd Phillips' film asks you to consider the circumstances that could create a being as inhumanly feral as the Joker. Shining a light on the underbelly of society, Joker - with the help of Joaquin Phoenix's draw-dropping performance - chronicles how a bad turn of events can lead to just that.

5. Marriage Story

The similarities with Noah Baumbach's film and lauded Academy winner Kramer vs. Kramer are clear, but Marriage Story is a more balanced affair that really gets under the skin of its topic of marital dissolution, while giving a fair airing to both its characters.

1. Cats

Are you concerned about the mental health of a friend or family member? If so, take them to see Cats. Then, at the end of the film, ask them if they enjoyed it. If their answer is yes, then I'm afraid to say they are almost certainly insane.

2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

3. Serenity

Car crash filmmaking of the highest order, the sort of thing you'd expect there to be repeat screenings of in Hell.

4. Doctor Sleep

Did anyone, besides die-hard Stephen King fans, really want a followup to The Shining? Judging by this turgid affair, the answer really ought to have been no.

5. Pet Semetary

A dull slog of a movie that is carried by its child star, but not enough to excuse everything else that is wrong about it.
