Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the surprise hits of 2017 and so it's not at all surprising that sequel The Next Level opts to tread familiar ground.
Once again reliant on the charisma of its lead actors, it serves up a narrative that is pretty much like-for-like. What is new is the introduction of Danny Glover and Danny DeVito who, as well as being hilarious in their own right, give Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart ample opportunity to serve up some truly excellent impersonations. And it's this sort of broad humour that gives the new Jumanji franchise its charm - the makers are clearly aware of its limitations, but know what its audience is likely to enjoy.
Every now and then, there's no harm in indulging that type of filmmaking and there's certainly enough in The Next Level to justify its inevitable third instalment.
