BET Awards 2016: The Round Up!

June 30, 2016

The BET Awards is an award ceremony that takes place every year, to celebrate the achievements in black entertainment, recognising music, television, sports and movies. This years annual award ceremony was held on June 26, in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater. Prior to the event it looked like Drake, Rihanna and Beyoncé are in the best position to win an award, Drake leading with 9 nominations, then Rihanna and Beyoncé just trailing with 6. However, this night at the BET's was not just about the awards, we also got to see five different tributes for Prince who passed in April '16. Read more to find out all the winners and hear about all of this years highlights.

Beyoncé kick started this years BET Awards with a very powerful performance of her new remix of 'Freedom' and even brought out Kendrick Lamar as a special guest. Beyoncé and Kendrick portrayed a powerful message about black rights, whilst giving a dynamic, yet very wet performance of the new remix 'Freedom'. Queen Bey started her performance fixed on the stage, standing in a pool of water, as her back up dancers passed through the aisles to the sound of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have A Dream' speech. The fact that Beyoncé had already been awarded the Centric Award may have influenced her excellent performance, the biggest surprise in Bey's set was when Kendrick Lamar jumped up to perform a new verse from LEMONADE track.

Beyoncé and Kendrick's performance was not the only one of the night of course, we also saw Prince tributes from; Erykah Badu & The Roots, Stevie Wonder & Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell, Janelle Monáe and more. We also saw performances from some of Hip-Hops biggest stars; Bryson Tiller, Fat Joe & Remy Ma, French Montana, Future, Usher, Young Thug and more.

There was one performance that stood out in particular, and that was Desiigner's performance of his hit record 'Panda'. Just after dropping his first ever project 'New English', he comes to the BET with a very lively performance. After watching Desiigner perform 'Panda' at various concerts and sets, I noticed that he brings so much energy to the stage. When hearing about him performing at the BET Awards I wasn't sure what to expect, I thought he might shy away from such a big moment. Despite him being on live TV, he still bounced around, dabbing all over the stage as the crowd sang his 'Panda' lyrics. This is only the start of Desiigner, with him signing to Kanye's label 'GOOD Music' at such a young age (18) and all the platforms he has been on, his career looks very bright. You can watch both, Beyoncé and Kenricks performance, along with Desiigner's below and check out the list of winners.
