After 13 years Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel is finally out of prison. On Wednesday the news broke and it had social media in a frenzy, news outlets desperately striving to break the news first.
Back in 2014 Vybz’s trial was the longest on the islands history, lasting 65 days in total. After being away for 13 years it was only right that he marked the occasion with a celebratory mixtape titled 'First Week Out', and brand new single 'Free'. Combining previously released records with some fresh new content, 'First Week Out' and the additional new release clearly marks his intent to hit us with more new music.
The reception from the whole world and the music industry has been nothing short of extraordinary, and this injection of new music feels like the icing on the cake. We all would have anticipated Vybz would mark the occasion in style and a new mixtape, single and business ventures seems fitting as he adapts to the outside world again.
‘First Week Out’ and 'Free' are both out now and available to stream, the project is 12 tracks long and runs for about 33 minutes. The fact he has been released in the summer and just over a week ahead of Jamaican Independence Day was definitely written in the stars for Kartel.
You can enjoy the new mixtape and single below and hopefully this is just the beginning of the new Vybz Kartel era.
