MOBO founder Kanya King CBE dies aged 57 as music world pays tribute to a true visionary

The MOBO Awards has announced the passing of its Founder and CEO, Kanya King CBE, who died peacefully on 3 June 2026 following a courageous battle with colon cancer, aged 57. Described by the organisation as “one of the most fearless champions the music world has ever known,” Kanya King leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the landscape of British music and culture for generations.

Thirty years ago, she remortgaged her home without institutional backing or industry support to build what would become the MOBO Awards - Music of Black Origin. At a time when Black music was routinely dismissed as niche by the mainstream industry, she chose to create a platform that would go on to redefine visibility in British culture.

Just weeks after its inception, the first MOBO Awards was broadcast nationally, marking a turning point for representation in UK music and opening doors for countless artists who had previously been overlooked.

Over the years, the MOBO stage became a cornerstone of British music culture, celebrating and elevating generations of talent including Stormzy, Little Simz, RAYE, Craig David, Sade, Amy Winehouse, Kano, Ms. Dynamite, Central Cee, and many more.

In one of her final public appearances at the MOBO Awards in Newcastle in February 2025, just months after her diagnosis, Kanya delivered a message that now feels even more profound:

“I never allowed someone to define my limits. Not in life. Not in business. And I’m certainly not going to have that happen now.”

It was a statement that captured the essence of her life and mission - unyielding, determined, and deeply rooted in belief in cultural change.

The MOBO Organisation has confirmed that the 2026 MOBO Awards, marking its 30th anniversary year, will be dedicated entirely to her memory. Every performance, every award, and every moment will honour the legacy she built from the ground up.
