As a 28-year-old man, I’m probably the oldest person who frequents the r/playboicarti subreddit, but I’ve been aware of the rumours concerning this collaboration for some time now, and I’m pleasantly surprised that it dropped. Latto is a consistent focal point in the Rap scene with a colourful plethora of musical performances as showcased by her 2024 release, Sugar Honey Iced Tea; meanwhile, her collaborator is arguably the genre’s last actual rockstar; a very peculiar individual cloaked in mystery and often dressed in outfits that would make an NWO-aligned Sting proud.

Here, two of Atlanta’s darlings unite on a modern-retelling of the ’03 Bonnie & Clyde' trope but updated to fit the general anxiety of the 2020s, less of a ‘love triumphs all’ kind of story and more of an ode to the almighty pocket-rocket. This nihilistic version is the perfect middle-ground for the coalescing of two disparate styles, the medieval sword swipe at the start of the song succinctly announces the ultra-violence that will be traded between the two rappers. Latto goes through her list of requirements for a partner, all of which would make the NRA bug out, whilst additionally underlining her handiness with the pew-pew. In an age of dating cynicism, this track does represent a certain (afro)pessimism that would make both Frank B. Wilderson III and Thomas Sowell lose sleep.
Riding the minimal beat, the vibrant Latto projects the kinda arrogance that is often associated with Rap’s hyper-masculinity but overlooked when enacted by her and her contemporaries; the track’s horrorcore leanings are a nice contrast to the two animated voices. Meanwhile, the resident androgynous vampire with nebulous gang ties performs in a serrated rap style that greatly compliments the homicidal DNA of this beat. Punctuated by overbearing SWAMP IZZO adlibs, Carti describes his appreciation for firearm-related customisation in a package that melds the most flamboyant aspects of Young Thug & Future’s early careers all whilst continuing from a 2024 run that hinted at an upcoming musical evolution.
