Jack Harlow & Dave: The Collab We Didn't Know We Needed!

Dave & Jack Harlow…. Instant click right!? It’s two names you might not have necessarily paired together beforehand but it feels like it could work.

From the start, we are greeted with mellow production, that fits as the perfect backing for these two to really get lyrical on. Which is quite fitting as this collaboration was formed for Cole Benett’s ‘Lyrical Lemonade’ compilation album. You can almost imagine all of the freestyles that upcoming rappers will do over the beat, in the same fashion of ‘Churchill Down’s’, ‘Poundcake’ etc. It has that infectious lofi hip hop vibe. Shoutout Kameron ‘Hollywood’ Cole on the production, he’s the guy behind Drake & Lil Wayne BB Freestyle and a few cuts from Jack Harlow’s recent album - a very smooth sound.

Jack Harlow & Dave

I was expecting Jack Harlow to give us his too cool for school flow, that we’ve grown to like, and he did just that. There’s no doubt Jack knows how to rap, his Mr Harlow YouTube archive proves that he can flow with the best of them, on any beat. This track opens up with him questioning the listener’s on if they understand his lifestyle - the ups, downs, trials and tribulation. Jack is talking about how much he has had to adapt to the life of fame. But he’s not shaken by it. There’s frustration in his tone more than vulnerability, which explains the hook ‘Stop Giving Me Advice’. It’s a chant, suggestion and warning all in one - if you don’t understand Jack, hit the road!

The second verse builds on this frustration and Jack talks more directly on the perils of fame. I will be honest, I was underwhelmed by this verse, the flows were nice, but the bars were mediocre - again! For some reason we’ve been getting a lot of passable, half hearted lyrics from Jack. It feels like a lot of this verse was a freestyle!? Maybe, if he took his pen back over those interlocked flows, it would’ve been more memorable. I’m just not a fan of rappers, rapping about rapping. After all this is Lyrical Lemonade, not Flow Soda.

My favourite section ‘You ever sign a 7 figure deal, with a birds quill, can’t even call It breakfast - cuz it isn’t your first meal (mill), forgotten birthdays but remember yours bars still!’

It’s a more vulnerable angle on the subject, Dave is saying that his priorities have changed, not just his lifestyle. He’s explaining that he has got to a place where your advice can’t benefit him.

A solid verse from Dave, but again not his best this year. I get the feeling this whole song was a relaxed studio session, after a good chat and reasoning between the artists involved. Jack spills out all of his current frustrations to us and Dave reflects on what’s been frustrating him along the way. It feels like a journal/diary entry, that happens to rhyme and that’s ok. It doesn’t feel like a single. It’s a good closing song for the Lyrical Lemonade album and probably wouldn’t have ever got a dope, stylish music video if it wasn’t on Cole Bennet’s album. I’m going to give this 8/10 with the visuals.
